Sumo Coal has been exporting coal through Maputo, RBCT and Durban ports for number of years and continues to do so as part of its market growth strategy.
Sumo has a fully integrated supply chain solution as the company owns in excess of five vessels with which coal is loaded and delivered in various ports for customers.
South Africa’s main source of energy in terms of power generation comes from coal. Most of the SADC countries depend on South Africa for supply and distribution even though hydro-power and other means are being utilized. It is for this reason that Sumo plans to penetrate the SADC, Sumo is currently looking at this market seriously as it provides market exposure. Sumo Coal will form co - marketing alliances with traders in the SADC region as it has become an important market and to ensure their energy needs are met.
In Europe and Asia, Sumo has established trading alliances and is exploring Middle-East markets due to growing demand of thermal coal. South Africa is the only African country exporting coal to major ports in the world; about 75% goes to European power utilities.
China and India has increasingly been a good customer of South African coal exporters. There is a growing demand of South African coal and that emphasis is even seen with direct investments to the country.
Sumo Coal in its drive to build a portfolio of projects has recently created a projects team responsible for current and future projects. The project team is supported by in-house drilling company and professional consultants. It is through this structure that Sumo will be able to take projects from early stage exploration to production. Sumo may depending on the nature and size of the project seek to form strategic partnerships with other mining companies and investors.
